The city of seven bridges best known for Hadrian's Wall was nurtured by a prosperous merchant community, and today is readily accessible to the traveler passing through to the outdoor pursuits and rich history of Northumbria.Pons Alias in Roman times became Monkchester in Saxon times and was renamed Newcastle by the French. Visitors might expect an industrial landscape, but while Newcastle carries remnants of its industrial past, the city centre was transformed in the 1800's by a local entrepreneur called Richard Grainger who started the transformation of Newcastle from a mediaeval town with its narrow alleyways and cobblestoned streets to broad avenues and classical architecture all undisturbed by WWII. Gray St starts at the imposing Monument to the 1832 Reform Act and sweeps down toward the River. Pause almost anywhere on the newly renovated Quayside to check out all seven bridges crossing the River Tyne. The first was the 1844 bridge linking Scotland to England; travelers would cross the River Tyne by ferry from Gateshead to Newcastle then continue their journey southward.
