First settled in the 6th century B.C. by Greek sailors, Marseille has always had a strong maritime tradition. From the Vieux (Old) Port, the Mediterranean city's hub, to Notre Dame de la Gare, with its Virgin Mary (protector of sailors), Marseille offers numerous opportunities to steep its visitors in local seaside culture. A blend of the raffish and the exotic, France's second-largest city has always had a somewhat edgy reputation, making it an often-missed stop on the tourist track. But recent gentrification has truly changed the face of the city's center. Follow the locals, and stop at one of the Port's numerous restaurants to try bouillabaisse, Marseille's famed fish soup, or relax with a glass of pastis, the city's renowned anise-flavored aperitif.
