"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life," said Samuel Johnson to his biographer, James Boswell in 1777, and nothing much has changed since then. The UK's capital is still one of the world's great metropolises, rich in history, innovation and extroversion. The pace is fast, but not New York manic; the culture is rich, but not Paris intense and the natives sometimes smile back - even on the Tube. Space - any space at all - is a highly priced commodity. The average traffic speed is lower than in horse and cart days, yet London's pulse races faster than ever. Every flavor under the sun is present: at least one eatery from every country on the globe squeezes in somewhere. Village-like boroughs lace cozy comforts into this metropolis of 18 million. The cityscape of imperial masterpieces is peppered with new money palaces, as well as the odd boarded-up and decaying corner. Royal razzmatazz polishes up the image wherever it may be tarnished. No city in Europe is more visited, more loved and more loathed by those who have been squeezed through its relentless mill.
