Lausanne, built on the banks of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) in the Canton of Vaud, is an international city which predates Roman times. Serving as the headquarters of many multinationals, as well as the International Olympics Committee, it is less known than Geneva, just 40 minutes away. Built on southern facing hillside terraces, Lausanne offers expansive views of the lake and the French cities across the water, all accessible by boat. A mild climate, lively ambiance, cultural opportunities and world-class educational facilities make it the preferred city of the young. Engineering and hotel schools attract students from all over the world, while hospitals and clinics draw patients from other countries. Lausanne has an excellent infrastructure, terrific public transportation, a focus on the environment and even free wi-fi in the town's main squares and airport. There's plenty to do for visitors. Take a train summer or winter to the nearby mountains, or to other European capitals. Visit the local Lavaux wineries (a UNESCO world heritage site) whose vines grow on steep terraced hillsides. French-speaking, Lausanne has a quiet, refined charm and according to recent studies, the Lausannois, like other Swiss, are some of the most satisfied people in the world.
