Kinsale, one of Ireland's loveliest small harbor towns, has a long and checkered history. The battle of Kinsale (1601) -- between the ruling English forces, and Ireland and its Spanish allies -- resulted in the defeat of the Irish, marking the end of the old Gaelic order. Kinsale is now a popular yachting center and hosts sailing events throughout the year. It's a haven for foodies, with its annual Gourmet Festival (in October) and an assortment of wonderful restaurants and pubs year round.Kinsale is well worth a day trip, or even a weekend visit from Cork.
