Despite its history, going back more than 500 years to the time of early Portuguese and Dutch settlement in Southeast Asia, there's actually very little here to attract tourists. That, coupled with the notoriously bad traffic, makes Jakarta one of the least attractive destinations in Indonesia. However, for those with time and a great deal of patience, there are still many remnants of old Batavia to be discovered. But there's more to Jakarta than historic buildings. There are also art and antiques markets selling handicrafts from all over Indonesia, along with many modern shopping malls and some quite good world class hotels.
