Europe's northernmost capital city is elegantly sprawled around the Baltic Sea on a peninsula scalloped by inlets scattered with rocky islets; Helsinki stands monument to her past under Swedish and Russian rule. Great public buildings were built in the 18th century as the city prospered under Swedish leadership-think the magical seaside fortress of Suomenlinna-as well as the elegant Neo-classical Lutheran cathedral. In contrast, Russian domination brought the flamboyant Orthodox cathedral as well as Empire and Art Nouveau palaces around Katajanokakka. Today the city also encompasses a pounding modern heart, with buzzing waterfront restaurants and bars, clean contemporary architecture, fashion-forward boutiques, and a slightly subversive nightlife.
