Pristine Geneva is located on the stunning Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) and is an international city to its core. The setting is picture perfect-a view of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, the city's lakefront, dominated by the famous "Jet d'Eau" -- Lac Leman provides a perfect opportunity for a stroll, jog, bike ride or swim. Geneva hosts about 200 international organizations, including the Red Cross, the United Nations Headquarters, banking giants and the European headquarters of many of the world's greatest companies. The Red Cross was founded in Geneva in 1863, and was the only international organization that the Swiss, with their penchant for being contrarian, joined until 2002 when they became the 190th member of the U.N. The source of the Rhone River is in the glaciers east of Lac Leman; the river passes through Lac Leman, splitting the city in two on its way to Lyon. Geneva reflects its Calvinist roots with a quiet and serene atmosphere. Forty museums, the Opera and Orchestra of Suisse Romande add to the cultural offerings in town, with the medieval town being the most sought after spot for city living. Geneva caters to a sophisticated palate with many fine restaurants, cafes, and some of the world's finest chocolatiers. The Rue du Rhone is lined with high end boutiques. Beautiful Swiss towns and villages border Lac Leman; Lausanne rises on a hillside from the lake, Montreux and Vevey make wonderful days trips. Located near the French border, the lovely lakeside town of Annecy in the French Alps and Chamonix are just a short drive away.http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D06E7D61031F935A2575AC0A9619C8B63
