Colmar, with a population of 65,000 is the capital of the Haut-Rhin departement, and the heart of the Alsatian wine region. The beautifully preserved medieval town is full of half-timbered houses and multi-colored historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and interesting shops. Colmar's ancient town was one of the few not damaged or destroyed by the Revolution or the World Wars, although some of the old houses have been restored due to wear. "La Petite Venise" (little Venice) is formed by the water of the Lauch River, with canals-traversed by footbridges-- traversing the area. Street names indicate the name of the medieval guilders that lived and worked in the quartier (district): quai de la Poissonnerie (fisherman's wharf,) rue des Marchands (Merchants' street,) rue des Boulangers (bakers' street.) Colmar is a great location for visiting Alsace and the Route du Vin, and the city offers a nice break from touring. The areas outside the medieval town are modern but most nice restaurants and hotels are in the old city.
