Cobh (pronounced "cove") commands one of the world's largest natural harbors. It was the main port from which Irish emigrants left for America. It was also a port of call for luxury passenger liners; Cobh was the last stop for the Titanic on its doomed maiden voyage. Three years later the Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine just southwest of the town. After a visit by Queen Victoria in 1849, Cove was renamed Queenstown but reverted to its original name in 1921, albeit with an Irish spelling. The Victorian seafront has rows of steeply terraced houses watched over by St. Colman's Cathedral, an impressive Gothic Revival cathedral.
