The town of Chartres, with its 42,000 inhabitants, is world famous for its towering medieval cathedral. Located on the Eure River, the city has other attractions that merit a look. The medieval town is well preserved; footbridges take you across the Eure. The church of St Pierre, near the river, has 14th century stained glass windows; the church of St-Aignan displays 17th century stained glass. Wander along the streets close to the river. Look for the half-timbered houses on the rue de la Poissonnerie; the Maison du Saumon et de la Truite qui File, a medieval half-timbered building on this street, is now a restaurant. Markets are held on several days: a food market on Saturday morning in the covered market on the place Billiard; a flower market on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays in the place du Cygne.Chartres is only about one hour from Paris, on the Paris-le Mans route. Many trains leave Paris' Gare Montparnasse for Chartres, passing by Versailles-Chantiers station (Versailles-CH), so you can easily combine these two magnificent monuments in a day trip. But given the pleasures of this town, you might want to stay overnight.
