Burgundy is an enormous region in France, composed of several wine growing areas. Located south of Paris, the Chablis region is perfect for a quick day-trip or a longer sejour (stay). The town of Chablis is located just 12 km from the A6 autoroute (exit 20 Tonnerre, at Auxerre-Sud,) a 2 hour drive from Paris. Located along the 48th parallel, Chablis is at the northern extreme of wine growing, with Champagne its closest winegrowing neighbor. The Serein River runs along the northern side of town, where most of the grapes for the Grands Crus (the best wines) are grown. Chablis has suffered through the centuries, from the Norman Invasions, to the Huguenot destruction of 1568, to phylloxera in the 19th century, and the world wars. In WWII the center of town was destroyed by heavy bombing, like much of Burgundy, but some ancient walls and buildings remain, along with the charming center. Wine tasting opportunities are everywhere, and there are several excellent restaurants and bistros, along with shops selling regional food products. The Tourist Office organizes tours of the town and vineyards, and wine and music festivals are held throughout the year.Several TGV trains leave the Paris Gare de Lyon for Montbard daily for the 66 minute trip;take the train then walk along the "Canal de Bourgogne" and watch the barges land. Car rentals are about 0.5 Km away, or get a taxi.
