Beijing's skyscraper forest greets visitors upon arrival and discourages any hope of character. Look closely, though: the steel and glass support an ancient core, barely concealing the secrets of its history and the portents of its future. At the heart of this booming empire lie the two stalwarts of times past: Tiananmen Square, the basilisk of the Communist regime under Mao, and the Forbidden City, exclusive realm of emperors. Roads girdle the city: arteries that grew as various city walls crumbled. Like tree rings, these chart China's growth and changing sociability from wanton isolation to eager embrace. Now everything is welcome and everything remembered. Despite its breakneck expansion and modernity, Beijing remains true to the duality of Yin-Yang: balancing its sleek, adroit, indestructible Superman exterior with a surprisingly sensitive, nostalgic and calm counterpart. Expats in Beijing have an adage that bears remembering: the longer you live here, the more you know and the less you understand.
