Pothead paradise or cultural capital? Amsterdam is both, and plenty more for the curious visitor. Fewer than a million people inhabit the metro area (and allegedly an equal number of bicycles), but the city's museums and arts calendar rival a metropolis five times its size. On a sunny afternoon in a sidewalk café, however, the street life alone can be as entertaining as anything you'd find in a more formal setting. Built on a series of canals and opening onto the Amstel River, Amsterdam is also remarkably beautiful, with architecture that ranges from skinny 16th-century gabled row houses to visionary 21st-century projects. And despite the ready availability of marijuana and hasish (the so-called "soft drugs" largely confined to one small section of town), the place is surprisingly kid-friendly, thanks to its small scale and loads of quirky activities. Another perk: Nearly every Amsterdammer speaks flawless English.
